Brian agreed to sit on the deferred 2029 asset instead of banking a pick immediately — but Kevin had to pay the toll to make that float happen, and the toll was Cade Otton, handed over for nothing but a delayed pick. Sources close to the situation say that's the number that matters here: a real player, attached basically for free, just to get a pick two years sooner off the books.
This is the part of the story nobody in that league wants attached to their name this week: Brian Jones is the same manager who, per multiple recent filings from this desk, just got fleeced by Charlie Koepsell in a same-round pick swap. That deal cost Brian an extra asset on top of the swap. This one flips the script entirely — Brian gives up nothing but time and comes away with a player and a pick. People familiar with Brian's ledger say he needed this one.
As for Kevin Jones — this is either a depth-chart clearing move that nobody will remember by October, or the first domino in a bigger teardown. Sources say watch his tight end room over the next two weeks. If Otton was surplus, fine. If he wasn't, Kevin just gave Brian Jones a discount on a problem he didn't know he had.
